Garden Maintenance Tips for London Homes

Easy seasonal jobs that keep a small London garden looking sharp all year round.

London gardens are small, hard-working spaces. The good news: a little regular attention goes a long way. Our gardening team looks after hundreds of gardens across East and North London, and these are the seasonal jobs that keep yours looking sharp without taking over your weekends.

Spring (March–May)

This is the busiest season. Give the lawn its first cut on a high blade setting, then drop the height gradually over the next two mowings. Edge the lawn with a half-moon edger for a sharp finish, this single trick makes any garden look cared for, even if the planting is simple.

Top up beds with fresh mulch (composted bark or well-rotted manure). It looks tidy, suppresses weeds and feeds your plants all at once. Prune late-flowering shrubs, sow hardy annuals and start a regular slug-and-snail patrol around tender new growth.

Summer (June–August)

Mow weekly and water deeply twice a week rather than a quick sprinkle daily, deep watering builds stronger roots. Deadhead roses and bedding plants regularly to keep flowers coming. Clip box and yew in late June or early July; trim hedges before the bird-nesting season is fully done by checking carefully first.

Patios get tired in summer. A jet wash and a re-sand of block paving in late summer makes a huge difference for autumn entertaining.

Autumn (September–November)

The big jobs are leaf clearance and lawn recovery. Rake or blow leaves off the lawn weekly so the grass keeps light through the autumn. Scarify (rake hard) to lift moss and thatch, then overseed any bald patches and top-dress with sharp sand or compost.

Cut back perennials, divide overcrowded clumps and plant spring bulbs in October. Check fence panels and posts for storm damage and book any repairs before winter sets in.

Winter (December–February)

A quieter season. Use the time to prune apple and pear trees, repair tools, clean pots, and plan changes for spring. Move fragile pots into sheltered spots and lag outdoor taps before the first hard frost.

If snow flattens shrubs or branches break in a storm, light corrective pruning early in spring is usually all that's needed.

A few small-garden specifics

Most London gardens have at least one of these challenges: shade from buildings, a small north-facing patch, or limited drainage. Shade-tolerant ferns, hellebores, Japanese anemones and ornamental grasses earn their place. For drainage issues, raised beds and gravel work better than fighting the soil.

Boundaries matter visually in a small garden. A consistent fence colour (a dark stain like 'Black Ash' is very forgiving) instantly makes a small space feel larger and more designed.

When to bring in a gardener

Routine mowing and trimming is easy to keep on top of, but the bigger seasonal jobs (hedge cuts, jet washing, scarifying, leaf clearance) often go quicker and tidier with a professional crew and the right kit.
